Advertising’s Most Important Word

If you had to guess the single most important word in advertising what would it be: free, special, discount, sale, new, improved, bigger, better?

So many words have lost their meaning or been corrupted by misuse or abuse that it is not an obvious choice. The words luxury, exclusive, and world class have been rendered meaningless after being applied to everything from eight hundred square foot condos to restaurants that serve microwave frozen dinners. We can’t even rely on light, diet, or low carb to actually describe what’s inside a package.

What advertisers have done is create a hyper cynical marketplace, where the audience for whatever you sell has lost faith in what is being said. The Web with its emphasis on content gives advertisers an opportunity to redeem themselves and to deliver meaningful information to its audience. All Content Is Advertising, All Advertising Isn’t

Some may cringe at the thought but in the final analysis all content is a form of advertising. Content is rarely if ever neutral, even if it doesn’t overtly promote a product or service; content always has a point to make, or an idea, concept, or position to advance. If content doesn’t provide some perspective, some meaningful knowledge, then does it really qualify as content? The same can be said for advertising, if it doesn’t explain, enlighten or engage, it is just noise. What Is Advertising’s Most Important Word?

My vote goes to the simple innocuous word “like:” a nondescript word that carries with it all the conceptualization power you need to create a business identity, to form a brand personality, and to position your product or service in the mind of your audience. A previous article of mine “A Website Without Video Is Like…” uses the power of metaphor to illustrate how this little four-letter word can crystallize an idea in the mind of an audience. Metaphor + Analogy + Stories: The Adman’s Best Friends

A metaphor explains complex concepts and hard to comprehend processes by comparing them to common everyday knowledge. We use metaphors everyday without even realizing we’re doing it. We ‘race’ to the office. We work like ‘dogs. ” And we all know, it’s a ‘jungle’ out there. Metaphors are critical to the way we communicate with each other and to the success of our marketing communication and advertising.

Metaphors can be extended into analogies, and analogies into stories, and stories into campaigns; and campaigns developed in this manner have a higher probability of achieving the elusive status of meaningful content that embeds your message in your audience’s collective consciousness. There is no better way to overcome a client’s objection than to put that objection into perspective with an appropriate allegorical story. Overcoming Objections: How Long Is Too Long?

We’ve all heard the constant bellyaching from impatience Web users about how long they have to wait for everything on the Web. Every time I hear this from somebody, I am reminded of the story (perhaps apocryphal) of the early introduction of the Polaroid Land camera.

Before the days of one-hour photo shops, digital photography, and instant video feedback, people had to wait up to a week for their pictures to be developed by the local pharmacy or camera shop. When Polaroid came out with a camera that delivered a finished photograph in sixty seconds, people were amazed; the era of instant gratification had begun.

So the story goes, a group of adventurers traveled deep into the Brazilian Rainforest to learn about the indigenous people. When they came across a tribe who had never seen outsiders before, they befriended them and took pictures of them with the Polaroid cameras they brought along. The natives loved the pictures since they had never seen anything like this before, but they did have one complaint, ‘why did it take so long for the pictures to develop?’

The problem is not technology; the problem is one of perception. Like the natives who perceived the sixty second developing of photographs to be slow, so to do many Web-users perceive the Internet to be slow when in fact it is an incredible technological achievement where anyone with a computer and Internet connection can access information from all over the world in seconds or, heaven forbid, minutes. The Better The Story, The Better The Communication

The solution to the problem is better communication, making yourself and your message instantly understood. People who are truly interested in what you have to say will wait for your Web page or video to load. What gets them frustrated is when they wait, and instead of getting a meaningful message, they get a bunch of nonsense that is irrelevant, self-congratulatory or completely incomprehensible.

A video or audio message on your website is more easily grasped than a page full of densely written text or cryptic bulleted points. But you will loose your audience quickly no matter what the form of your message if it’s confusing, muddled, overly complex, or buried in b-school platitudes and industry jargon.

You need your message to be understandable, engaging, and memorable and one of the best ways to convey that message is to compare it to something your audience can relate to. It’s like teaching your kids a life lesson by reading them one of Aesop’s Fables. Finding Your Metaphor

Some people have a knack for expressing things in a way that an audience will instantly grasp and more importantly remember. For those of us in the communication, marketing, advertising, and creative development businesses it is a necessary skill learned over the years. But for those in the day-to-day grind of business’s nitty-gritty it is rarely an ability that ever gets developed.

Creating a Web video campaign that your audience is going to watch, remember, and pass on to colleagues requires a commitment of time and money, and you want to make sure it communicates your message effectively. Rather than using your traditional approach concentrating of features and facts, try something different; try developing a campaign based on a metaphor that delivers your brand’s personality and emotional value-add.

Where to begin? You need to set yourself free from the concrete, and concentrate on the conceptual. If this seems like a difficult thing to wrap your head around, then start with baby steps. Concentrate On The Conceptual

Any effective marketing campaign whether it’s a series of Web videos, direct emails, magazine display ads, banner ads, outdoor billboards, television and radio spots, or any combination there of, will only work if it focuses on a single message.

At the heart of all advertising is the promise you commit to delivering to your clients. No matter how clever or memorable your marketing, if you fail to deliver on that promise, you will fail.

Learn a lesson from the politicians. The general publics’ opinion of politicians is about on a par with having a prostate exam. Politicians can’t help themselves, the promise the electorate what the electorate wants to hear, and then fail to deliver on promises that can never be kept. Consequently, people become cynical and distrust everything politicians say.

Failure to deliver on your promise to be the cheapest, the best, or the guy with the most features, is like a politician promising no new taxes. Read my lips! Those kinds of promises are a prescription for marketing disaster.

Taking the conceptual approach requires a certain degree of confidence and an understanding that you are going to have to give something up to get something in return. If you present your identity as the Timex of widgets, inexpensive and ubiquitous; then you are giving up the audience looking for the Rolex of widgets, expensive and exclusive. Audience Resonance: It’s All About Striking A Nerve

One of the most memorable commercials ever to appear on television was the 1985 introduction of the Apple Macintosh computer. The anti-big brother message said nothing of bits or bytes, or anything else computer related, but it did establish Apple’s character and personality with its allegorical message, a message that is still valid today.

If your marketing message lacks this kind of power and personality; if your advertising is getting lost, or drowned-out by the competition, try finding a metaphor that instantly tells your audience who you are and why they should care.

Will Tiger play in the 2010 Masters?

While Tiger Woods fully expects to be back on the PGA Tour in 2009, the world No. 1-ranked player says the exact date of his return remains unknown. It gave the sense to us that Woods might not return by the Masters. Woods said he’s unsure when he’ll be back on the course again. “I don’t know how my body is going to heal from this and when I can return and start rotating on it and start moving the leg a little bit,” Woods said. “And then from there, obviously you have your practice sessions, your prep and then obviously ultimately playing in tournaments, so I don’t know how that’s going to be. ” Will Tiger will come back to 2010 Masters ? There are two primary schools of thought: One, he’ll return in March and get ready for the Masters and continue his chase toward Jack Nicklaus’ record of 18 major championships with the handy clubs he won’t play at all in 2010. “If he and his wife Elin decide to work it out, it could take a long time,” said Champions Tour player John Cook, a longtime Woods friend and one of two touring professionals who attended the Woods’ wedding in 2004. “If they decide not to stay together, I think he goes out pretty quick. If he works on the emotional things he needs to heal. It wouldn’t surprise me at all. ” Multiple professional golfers have told me they don’t think he’ll play this year. One emphatically said he sees no way Woods will play the Masters. Another said the news media wrongly portrays that Nicklaus’ record is the most important thing to Woods. “I don’t think he’ll play until his marital situation is settled,” one veteran touring pro said. Or at least cleared up one way or the other. The technical term, I believe, is “when the dust settles. ” That makes sense. The quicker a decision is made on divorce or reconciliation, the faster the process goes and the sooner we’ll see him play his callaway ft i-brid irons. A decent guess is we’ll see him when his world and hers are more comfortable again. It will be easier for him to re-enter public life once everyone knows his wife is taken care of, that he did right by his family in the messy aftermath, that he got help, that he learned something and changed. The easy default is March. That’s the sports side. The sports timetable is easily measured. But the human side isn’t. The human side knows no timetable. Things like divorce and emotional healing move at their own speed. One thing about Woods is certain: He tends not to play until he’s ready. If he returns in March, his “indefinite” leave would mean missing 2-3 tournaments. Some think that doesn’t sound like an “indefinite” leave. The longer Woods sits out, the more he heals and the more the frenzy dies down. The longer he sits out, the more golf will want him back, the more sports will miss him. Time is his ally. Woods is an athlete who messed up big-time. His actions have cost him a high level of embarrassment. They have cost him multimillions. They might have cost him his family. At the end I want to say I feel for him in his regrets, but the past cannot compensate, he will become a reverse textbook in the golf history. In my idea, Tiger Woods should cam down and return to his family, live in a happy life with his family in the future. It must be the most happy things in the world. Don’t you think so ?

Kragthorpe: Golf’s OK without Tiger — for now

In a series of messages addressing the state of the PGA Tour, commissioner Tim Finchem cheerfully began promoting other golfers for fans to follow during Tiger Woods’ absence. And then, recognizing the reality of life without the world’s No. 1 player, Finchem concluded, “We’ve literally got nobody, OK?” He really said that. Well, the “Saturday Night Live” version of Finchem did, anyway. A staff member replaced sponsor logos as the commissioner spoke, becoming disheveled and desperate, with the tour being backed by the Madoff Investment Group and Major League Soccer - and then even they disappeared. The sketch gave golf a new forum and Finchem good-naturedly labeled it “kind of flattering. ” It also drove home the perception of how much it hurts the tour to have Tiger stay away while repairing his personal life or hiding or whatever he’s doing in the wake of his rampant infidelity. The tour can get by without Tiger, but just temporarily. To those of us who would watch anybody play golf, Tiger’s absence is only a minor annoyance. Sunday’s final round of the season-opening SBS Championship was great stuff, with Geoff Ogilvy shooting 22 under par to overcome Rory Sabbatini’s closing 63 in a field of 2009 tournament winners under blue skies and sunshine in Hawaii. I also understand how much Woods drives the sport, how he attracts the casual viewer and how his presence raises the level of competition for everybody. So do the other players. They’ll defend their sport and their tour, but they’re not kidding themselves.   “I wish he would come back as soon as possible,” U. S. Open champion Lucas Glover said during a news conference last week. “It makes us play better, makes the tour better, makes the sponsors happier and all of that stuff. ” The tour is used to missing Tiger, especially at this time of year. Woods always has eased into the season and would end up playing only about 16 tournaments. Television ratings held steady when Woods was out with a knee injury in 2008, Finchem said, although he welcomes the spike the star creates. Finchem also cited strong sponsor commitments. There’s value in the other players, the tour brand and the volunteer organizations that run tournaments. Still, there’s only one Tiger. “We need him out here and the tour needs him out here,” Steve Stricker said. So when will he be out there? “We are all obviously curious,” Ogilvy said. “Is he having five years off? Is he ever coming back?” Nobody knows for sure, but Woods likely will return by the Masters in April, and resume his pursuit of Jack Nicklaus’ record 18 major titles (he’s at 14) in a year that also features majors at iconic courses Pebble Beach and St. Andrews. What if he did stay away longer? In a sense, the more extended his absence, the more drama his return creates and the more challenging his chase of Nicklaus becomes. Anything Tiger does to increase his degree of difficulty — like needing knee surgery, or coming back from it — makes him more fascinating to watch. Yet when it comes to golf’s place in the overall sporting consciousness, Woods’ being away “certainly doesn’t help,” British Open winner Stewart Cink said. “No sport would be at the same level without its No. 1 player,” Finchem acknowledged. “But I think the gloom and doom needs to go away. ” It did this past weekend in Hawaii, where Woods never plays, anyway. What’s Your Fitness DNA?

What’s Your Fitness DNA?How to understand the apple doesn’t fall far from the family treeWhy do you like Fitness? Why are you passionate about the topic? Obviously, you were blessed with the gift of health, fitness, maybe even athletics. So is it possible that DNA mapped your path in life before you were born? When Mary Lou Retton catapulted to international fame by winning the All Around Gold Medal in women’s gymnastics at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, becoming the first American woman ever to win a gold medal in gymnastics she visualized her winning and success for years prior to her great achievments. Practicing time and time again for this event in her head became the fuel for her relentless drive to become a top gymnist,  motivational speaker and corporate spokesperson and also travels the world as a “Fitness Ambassador” promoting the benefits of proper nutrition and regular exercise. Mary Lou serves as national chairperson and sits on the Board of Governors of the Children’s Miracle Network. Mary lou is following what I would call her DNA. Dana Torres, otherwise known as the even dozen won three silver medals in Beijing, bringing her career total to 12. That ties her for first with Jenny Thompson for the most for a U. She also won a silver in the 50m free, losing the gold by just . 01 of a second. Torres already was the oldest U. S. swimming gold medalist at 33 in in Sydney. At age 41, she’s the oldest Olympic swimming medalist in history. She’s also the only swimmer to win a medal in five Olympics. She is another athlete that “inherited” her drive and DNA. Amateur titles came in 1994. He turned pro in late summer 1996 and played 7 tournaments on the PGA Tour, needing to finish in the Top 125 to avoid having to go through Q-School. Woods won twice and posted 5 straight Top 5 finishes. In 1997, he won the Masters for his first major. Woods won just once in 1998, but in 1999 he began a string of consecutive Player of the Year awards that didn’t end until Vijay Singh won the title in 2004. He won 8 times in 1999, then 9 more times in 2000. Woods’ 2000 season is arguably the best ever on the PGA Tour. He became the second golfer to win three professional majors in one year and broke Byron Nelson’s more-than-50-year-old scoring average record. In 2001, when he won the Masters, Woods became the first golfer to hold all four professional majors at the same time. Tiger Woods holds or shares the record for the low score in relation to par in all four professional majors. He’s won the U. S. Open, then revealed that he was playing with a torn ACL and with a fracture in his leg. He underwent surgery shortly after and missed the next eight months. The 2009 WGC Accenture Match Play Championship marked his return. He is a perfect example of following his destiny, God given talents, and DNA. Woods won the Optimist International Junior tournament 6 times, starting at age 8. He won three U. S. Junior Amateurs, the first to do so. His first of three straight U. S. S. Open by 15 strokes, the Masters by 12 and the British Open by 8 strokes. A swing change slowed his winning a bit in 2004, and his record streak of consecutive cuts ended at 142 in 2005. But he roared back with two majors in ‘05. Woods took a couple months off in 2006 following the death of his father, and missed the cut in his return at the U. S. Open. But then he won the next two majors and reeled off wins in the next eight tournaments he played. In 2008, Woods won a dramatic playoff victory in the U. S. Open, then revealed that he was playing with a torn ACL and with a fracture in his leg. He underwent surgery shortly after and missed the next eight months. The 2009 WGC Accenture Match Play Championship marked his return. He is a perfect example of following his destiny, God given talents, and DNA.
